The nobleman of the trees

It speaks with its nose! To communicate, the crowned lemur leaves its scent on branches using scent glands. These marks carry messages to other lemurs: signalling a presence, taking part in marking a territory, or giving information about an identity.

Threats and conservation

The crowned lemur is threatened by deforestation linked to agriculture, logging for timber and charcoal, and hunting for its meat; it is also sometimes taken as a pet. To protect it, the forests of Madagascar are preserved and the species is present in several nature reserves and national parks. Breeding programmes in zoos also help to safeguard it.

Fun fact

The crowned lemur owes its name to the crown-shaped patch of fur on the top of its head.
