The king of Madagascar
It fights… with smells! Males rub their tail against their scent glands to soak it in their own perfume, then wave it towards their rivals. These “stink fights” are a way of intimidating each other without necessarily coming to claws.
Threats and conservation
The ring-tailed lemur is threatened by deforestation, forest fires, agriculture, hunting and illegal capture. To protect it, the forests of Madagascar are preserved and the species is present in several nature reserves and national parks. Breeding programmes in zoos also help to safeguard it.
Fun fact
The ring-tailed lemur sunbathes by sitting with its arms held wide open to warm itself up!
