The lemur with the flaming belly
The red-bellied lemur owes its name to the russet colour of its belly, which is especially striking in the male.
Threats and conservation
The red-bellied lemur is threatened by deforestation, forest fires, agriculture and the fragmentation of its habitat. To protect it, the forests of Madagascar are preserved and protected areas are created. Breeding programmes in zoos also help to safeguard it.
Fun fact
Among red-bellied lemurs, the father takes great care of the young and carries it much of the time!
