The giant fisherman
Great white pelicans sometimes fish in groups to be more effective. Swimming side by side, they drive the fish towards shallow water, where they become easier to catch!
Threats and conservation
The great white pelican is threatened by wetland pollution, habitat destruction and disturbance of its nesting sites. To protect it, wetlands are preserved, breeding colonies are safeguarded, and protected areas are created.
Fun fact
Its huge throat pouch works as a fishing net: it traps the fish, drains the water, then swallows its catch. It is not used to store food.
