The dancer of the marshes
Its long flattened bill lets it sift through water and mud. It sweeps it from side to side to locate and seize its prey!
Threats and conservation
The roseate spoonbill is threatened by wetland pollution, habitat destruction and disturbance of its nesting sites. To protect it, wetlands are preserved, breeding colonies are safeguarded, and protected areas are created.
Fun fact
At hatching, the chicks have a small straight pointed bill. It flattens and gradually takes on its characteristic shape as they grow.
