The king of the savannah
A symbol of strength and courage, the African lion is the only big cat that lives in social groups called “prides”. The male is the shield of the pride, and that is ultimately his main role.
Threats and conservation
The lion is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching and conflict with humans. To protect it, nature reserves are created and managed, and monitoring, laws and cooperation have been strengthened. Population monitoring, breeding programmes and informing the public also help to safeguard it.
Fun fact
Lionesses are the pride's main hunters. They work as a team, with impressive strategy and great coordination!
