The singer of the Asian forests
The white-handed gibbon is one of the best acrobats in the animal kingdom. It can move by brachiation (swinging from branch to branch) at over 50 km/h using only its arms.
Threats and conservation
The white-handed gibbon is threatened by deforestation, hunting, illegal trade and forest fragmentation. To protect it, forests are being preserved and restored, and law enforcement and surveillance have been strengthened. Population studies and monitoring, along with raising awareness among local communities and involving them, complete these efforts.
Fun fact
The gibbon is one of the noisiest animals in the forest! Its song carries up to 3 kilometres and serves to communicate with other groups.
