The clever little monkey of the forests
A true little genius of the forest, the brown capuchin learns by watching its peers (imitation) and finds ingenious ways to reach its food or open containers.
Threats and conservation
The brown capuchin is threatened by deforestation, hunting, trafficking and habitat fragmentation. To protect it, tropical forests are being preserved and restored, and laws and controls against illegal trade have been strengthened. Population studies and monitoring, along with raising awareness among and educating local communities, complete these efforts.
Fun fact
The brown capuchin is one of the few animals to use tools: it sometimes wields stones as hammers to crack nuts open and reach their precious contents!
