The stripes of the savannah
A natural lawnmower of the savannah, Grant’s zebra eats tall, fibrous grasses. Its grazing then encourages fresh young shoots to grow, which many other herbivores feed on.
Threats and conservation
Grant’s zebra is threatened by habitat loss, hunting, poaching, drought and climate change. To protect it, savannahs are being protected, corridors are being created and laws against poaching have been strengthened. Population studies and monitoring also help to protect it.
Fun fact
At birth, a zebra foal must memorise its mother's stripes within a few hours so as not to lose her in the herd!
