The king with the majestic moustache
With its long white moustache, the emperor tamarin is reminiscent of the German emperor Wilhelm II, famous for his facial hair. This striking resemblance is what gave it its name!
Threats and conservation
The emperor tamarin is threatened by habitat loss, hunting, illegal trade and forest fires. To protect it, its habitat is being protected and restored, and laws against illegal trade have been strengthened. Informing and raising awareness among local communities, along with population studies and monitoring, complete these efforts.
Fun fact
Among emperor tamarins it is often the father who carries the babies on his back! He hands them back to their mother only for feeding.
