The smallest monkey in the world
At just 12 to 15 cm long and weighing a featherlight 120 grams or so, the pygmy marmoset is the smallest monkey in the world!
Threats and conservation
The pygmy marmoset is threatened by habitat loss, logging, illegal trade and forest fires. To protect it, tropical forests are being protected and laws against illegal trade have been strengthened. Informing and raising awareness among local communities, along with population studies and monitoring, complete these efforts.
Fun fact
The pygmy marmoset uses its teeth like drills to pierce tree bark and feed on the sap.
