The traveller of the Arctic lands
Reindeer undertake some of the longest land migrations in the world. Some herds travel more than 5,000 km a year. They can even dig up to 50 cm under the snow to find food.
Threats and conservation
The Finnish forest reindeer is threatened by climate change, hunting, poaching, human disturbance, diseases and parasites. To protect it, natural areas and migration routes are being protected, working with the indigenous peoples who manage the herds sustainably. Reindeer are monitored to anticipate threats, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions helps to protect the Arctic.
Fun fact
A reindeer's eyes change colour with the seasons: golden in summer, they turn blue in winter to see better through the darkness of the long Arctic nights.
