The discreet giant of the savannahs
Although it can fly, the southern ground hornbill prefers to walk: it spends most of its time roaming the savannah in search of food.
Threats and conservation
The southern ground hornbill is threatened by habitat loss, poaching, trafficking, collisions and human disturbance. The species is protected in many countries and protected areas are being created. Anti-poaching awareness campaigns, along with population studies and monitoring, complete these efforts.
Fun fact
With its long eyelashes, the southern ground hornbill looks every bit a film star! In fact they mainly serve to shield its eyes from dust and branches.
