The ghost of the northern forests
The lynx has excellent eyesight and hearing. It can spot prey several hundred metres away or hear another up to half a metre under the snow!
Threats and conservation
The Eurasian lynx is threatened by habitat loss, declining prey, poaching, trapping and road collisions. It is strictly protected in most of the countries where it lives, and forests and ecological corridors are being preserved. Monitoring and research programmes help to better understand the species, and local communities are informed so they can live alongside it.
Fun fact
Unlike many cats, the lynx purrs when relaxed, rather like a domestic cat.
