The discreet lord of the savannah
The greater kudu’s horns can grow to over 1.5 metres long and form up to three full spirals! They are among the longest and most impressive horns in the animal kingdom, and they keep growing for much of its life.
Threats and conservation
The greater kudu is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting and human-wildlife conflict. To protect it, savannahs and open woodland are being preserved, and many protected areas have been created. Laws and patrols have been strengthened to fight poaching, and local communities are informed to help protect the species.
Fun fact
Despite weighing 300 kg, the greater kudu can leap more than 2 metres high to clear an obstacle.
