The giant of the savannahs
The ostrich is the largest bird in the world. Although it cannot fly, it can run at up to 70 km/h to escape predators, which makes it the fastest bird on land!
Threats and conservation
The ostrich is threatened by habitat loss, hunting, poaching, collisions and egg collection. To protect it, savannahs and arid areas are being preserved, and wildlife-friendly farming practices are encouraged. Laws against poaching have been strengthened, and local communities are being made aware of the ostrich’s importance.
Fun fact
An ostrich's eyes are bigger than its brain! They give it excellent eyesight, enough to spot danger several kilometres away.
