The tireless runner of the savannahs
The blue wildebeest takes part in one of the greatest animal migrations in the world. Every year, more than a million wildebeest cross the plains of East Africa in search of fresh pasture.
Threats and conservation
The blue wildebeest is threatened by habitat loss, worsening droughts, predation, disease and collisions. To protect it, migration corridors are being protected and pastures managed sustainably. Diseases are monitored and measures are taken to prevent them from spreading, and local communities are informed and involved to promote coexistence and conservation.
Fun fact
A newborn wildebeest calf can stand and run just a few minutes after coming into the world!
