The cleaner of the cliffs
Despite its role as a scavenger, it helps limit the spread of disease by clearing the countryside of animal carcasses.
Threats and conservation
The Egyptian vulture is threatened by poisoning, electrocution on power lines and the dwindling of its food resources. To protect it, nesting sites are preserved, power lines are made safe, and conservation and reintroduction programmes are carried out.
Fun fact
The Egyptian vulture is one of the few birds to use tools: it throws stones to break open ostrich eggs!
