The giant of the savannah
Peaceful and elegant, the giraffe plays a key role in the balance of its ecosystem by regulating vegetation through its feeding, and by dispersing seeds over long distances.
Threats and conservation
The giraffe is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, climate change and poaching. To protect it, nature reserves are created and managed, and monitoring, laws and awareness-raising have been strengthened. Population monitoring, breeding programmes and informing the public also help to safeguard it.
Fun fact
The giraffe has a blue-black tongue that can measure up to 45 cm! It allows it to grasp thorny leaves without injuring itself.
