The jewel of the marshes
With its long curved bill, the glossy ibis probes the mud for its meal: insects, worms, crustaceans, molluscs, small fish and sometimes even frogs! Its bill works as a probe.
Threats and conservation
The glossy ibis is threatened by habitat destruction, pollution and disturbance of its nesting sites. To protect it, wetlands are preserved, breeding sites are safeguarded, and the species is present in several protected areas.
Fun fact
In good light, its plumage reveals magnificent metallic green, bronze and purple sheens, especially striking in adults.
