The pearled bird
On the top of its head it carries a hard growth known as a “helmet”. This grows with age and is part of its very distinctive appearance.
Threats and conservation
The helmeted guineafowl is threatened by habitat destruction, hunting and nest predation. To protect it, savannahs are preserved, breeding sites are safeguarded, and the species is present in several protected areas.
Fun fact
The helmeted guineafowl would rather run than fly: it can reach almost 35 km/h!
