The ghost of the South American savannahs
The maned wolf is a true gardener of the savannah: by eating fruit and then dispersing its seeds, it helps its environment regenerate.
Threats and conservation
The maned wolf is threatened by habitat loss, road collisions, hunting, persecution and wildfires. To protect it, savannahs, grasslands and wetlands are being preserved, wildlife crossings are being built and drivers are being made aware of the risks. Local communities are informed about the species’ ecological role, and population monitoring helps to better understand it.
Fun fact
The maned wolf's urine gives off a surprising smell, often compared to that of cannabis!
