The colourful lookout of the forests
The red-crested turaco often prefers running and hopping through the trees rather than flying. It moves through the canopy with astonishing agility.
Threats and conservation
The red-crested turaco is threatened by deforestation, hunting and forest fragmentation. To protect it, tropical forests are being preserved and restored, and laws and controls against illegal trade have been strengthened. Population studies and monitoring, along with raising awareness among and educating local communities, complete these efforts.
Fun fact
The red-crested turaco is one of the few birds in the world to possess a true green pigment in its feathers, called "turacoverdin"!
