The guardian of the bamboo forests
The red panda is not a bear like China’s giant panda! It has its own zoological family and is more closely related to the raccoon than to the giant panda. It can be found up to 4,000 m above sea level in the Himalayan mountain ranges.
Threats and conservation
The red panda is threatened by habitat loss, hunting, poaching and climate change. To protect it, its habitat is being protected and restored, and laws against poaching have been strengthened. Informing and involving local communities, along with population studies and monitoring, complete these efforts.
Fun fact
When it feels threatened, the red panda rears up on its hind legs and raises its arms to look bigger and impress its opponent.
